Getting Used To Goggles

Getting your child to actually wear their goggles can seem like a tall order. Know you’re not alone—it’s a common struggle. Here’s where to start:

☀️ Give them ownership - Let kids be a part of picking out their goggles. Doing so gives them an opportunity to express themselves and makes them more likely to wear their goggles. There are tons of great options for kids’ goggles, with plenty of stylish and colorful choices as well as durable and lightweight options for the more active kiddos. 

☀️ Take baby steps - Transitioning to something new is hard for anyone. Kids are no different. Some will get in the swing of things quicker than others. The best thing you can do is start small and ask your child to wear their goggles for a few seconds a day. Then move up to a few minutes a day. Practice wearing them away from the pool. Whether it's at home watching TV or playing Lego, getting use to how the goggles feel on their face and eyes will help you convince them to wear them at their lesson. Keep going for up to a few weeks, and eventually wearing goggles will become the norm and not the exception. 

☀️ Match each other. Find someone your child can relate to who wears their goggles in the pool. Together, put your goggles on and play games looking under the water. Also consider having two pairs of goggles, one for them in the pool and one pair to lend to a friend while swimming together.

☀️ Ask their opinion - Take the time to go try on a few different pairs if your child’s goggles aren’t fitting right. We want to know what style is and isn’t working, and be happy to make adjustments to the fit as needed. Usually the simplest goggles, big enough just to cover the eyes fit best.

☀️ Set expectations- Always let the child know what’s expected of them with his or her goggles. To use them when they’re going underwater and to place them down gently outside of the pool when they’re not using them.
